Ask the Expert: What About Professional Carpet Cleaners?

Flooring_expert_image

Question:

What kind of carpet cleaning should I choose? My carpets are very dirty and have lots of stains on them. I haven’t hired a professional cleaning company before, so I’m not sure which type of cleaning I need. I’d like a product which will clean thoroughly, dry quickly, and does not involve moving all my furniture out. I asked several carpet cleaning companies, but their suggestions were all different.  Can you help me sort this out?

Answer:

I would suggest looking at the original carpet maintenance manual which should have been provided when you purchased the carpet.   This manual will have a wealth of information in it, relating to cleaning techniques and product recommendations.  If the manual isn't available to you, the next step would be to call the technical department of the carpet manufacturer.  They will be able to help you determine which cleaning is best for you.

Finally, if you bought the house with the carpet already in it you may not know the manufacturer.  In that case I would say that in general, hot water extraction is very effective.  I would suggest also pretreating stains with a spot remover, such as Folex.   Should you decide not to remove the furniture, please take care to cover your furniture to protect it from water.

Ask the Expert: DIY Floor Refinishing Techniques

113418882_9a771ad014

Question:

I just tore up the carpet in my living room and found that I have hardwood floor underneath of it.  I plan to fix it up myself. I want to stain the wood and also put a polyurethane coat on it. I see that there are some stains that come with the polyurethane mixed with it already.  Is it alright to buy the “2 in 1” products or do I need to buy them both separate?

Answer:

If you've found a stain product with polyurethane in it, that is just fine to purchase. You’ll also save yourself an extra step in the refinishing process.  You may want to consider the Dura Seal products as they have a line of products available for staining, sealing and patching.

Ouch! My Hardwood Floor Gives Me Slivers!

4822495344_cbfc6b342d

Question:

My hardwood floor gives me slivers when I walk on them.  Can you tell me an inexpensive way to fix this problem myself?

Answer:

It’s easy to fix the occasional splinter in your wood floors, especially if the splinters are of a medium or large size.  Here is an easy fix in 6 steps:

1. Lift up the splintered piece of wood with a utility knife.

2. Place some wood glue on the underneath side of the piece of wood.

3. Push the splinter back into the floor.

4. Wipe the area with a damp cloth.

5. Place a weighted object such as a book on top of the splinter. Leave the object on the splinter for 24 hours.

6. Lightly sand the splintered area and refinish the floor.

Please note that if the wooden plank has severe splintering it will most likely have to be replaced.  If you are experiencing very small splinters in different areas of your floor, you may need to take a fine grade sand paper to the rough areas to smooth out any imperfections.  Refinish the sanded areas when you are done.

Help! I Have a Spill on my Brand New Carpet! What to Do? #ask #expert

5300882185_9dd65ca009

Question:

Help!  I spilled food on my brand new carpet.   I cleaned it with my regular carpet spray and got the stain out, but now it's flat in that spot.  The texture of the cleaned area is sort of brushed and fluffy and it doesn’t have the body or stiffness of the rest of the carpet.  It’s very noticeable.   How can I make that spot look like the rest of the carpet?

Answer:

Don’t worry!  This is an easier solution than you would think.  You can simply and easily spray Scotch Guard (TM) to the affected area to restore body and stiffness. Use your fingers to shape the carpet back to it’s original form.

I also recommend calling the technical department of the manufacturer of your new carpet as they may have recommended products that you can purchase for spot cleaning that can help you avoid this problem in the future.

Bonus: this trick also works for carpet that has been pressed down due to heavy furniture sitting on it.  Good luck!

Ask the Expert: How Can I Care for my Laminate Floor on the Cheap?

Flooring_expert_image

Question: Can you use a steam mop on laminate floors?

Answer: Laminate floors are extremely durable, and can withstand a lot of rough and tumble living, but for cleaning purposes you never want to use a steam mop on a laminate floor.

Laminate floors react the same as wood floors to moisture. Even if you don't see immediate damage, over time, you will see damage to your laminate.

The Good News?  You don’t need an expensive cleaner.   A simple sweep or dust mop does an amazing job.  Plus it’s a lot more eco-friendly than the harsh chemicals on the market.   Or for a deeper clean you can use a damp mop.  I recommend adding a couple of drops of ammonia to a warm water solution and make sure you thoroughly wring out your mop before use.

Ideas for Using Blue Hues for Effective Home Decorating

168407843_f998b7538d

Blue isn’t just for a baby boy’s nursery anymore.  With so many different shades, the possibilities and color combinations are nearly endless.  Use it in your breakfast nook, on your favorite chairs, or use it on the spindles in your stair case--each spindle a different shade, even??

Choose the right hue of blue to set the mood in your bathroom.  Use light blue on the wall to evoke the sky setting in.  A pale aqua stool can evoke a more tropical theme, especially if a citrusy yellow item is introduced.

Pick blues that are more neutral then primary and you’ll be able to get away with alot in a space.  Undertones of gray and beige help patterns to easily mingle, and still work together.

Feel free to pick a curtain divider in a shade of gentle blue- evoking the tropical feel of the ocean in your own living room.

Paint pots sea blue and incorporate them onto the outside of your house to bring the ocean to your backyard.

In a relatively neutral room, pop in some pieces of color with a blue bedspread, shelving unit, and chaise lounge.

If you’re feeling brave, paint the glass of your linen cabinet to match another shade of blue in the house.

How to Make Your Backyard Perfectly Lit for BBQs and Parties

2480124518_f8b60e7b04

With summer in full swing, it’s time to get your backyard ready for entertaining.  Whether it’s a fun neighborhood dinner barbeque, or a glitzy evening cocktail party, here are some tips on making your space luminous.

-To bring the beach to your backyard, arrange large clam-type shells (can be purchased at a souvenir shop) in a shallow tray and fill with a little sand and tea light.

-When you need lighting, but there are no electrical outlets to be found, try filling some vintage bottles with oil and wicks (can be purchased at any craft store).  Arrange the bottles in a large hurricane for protection, and watch them glow.

-Hang some small, quilted jam jars from your outdoor arbor.  Place tea lights inside.  For a more dazzling effect, hang crystals from the bottom of each jar, and enjoy the refraction of light.

-For a Hawaiian themed party, line a backyard walkway with tiki torches.  Anchor in buckets filled with sand, if need be.

-Have your kids help create “sand candles” for your next back yard bash.  Place a candle inside a glass container and pour different colors of sand around the candle in varying levels.

Clever, Cheap, and Cool Ways to Decorate Your Space

4951016241_877d88ae0b

Here are some more helpful ideas for decorating on a budget!

Living Room:

Use a shade to hide your television when not in use.

When you do want to use it, just roll up and, voila!, ready for the next marathon of Desperate Housewives.

Bed Room:

Hang a heavy tapestry behind a dresser for an elegant, yet oh-so-chic touch.  Make sure the fabric has some weight to it to pull off its 15th century flair.

Make a “Quilt Headboard” by hanging grandma’s wedding gift on a wooden rod securely fashioned behind your mattress.

Kitchen:

Think Curtains.  Cabinet curtains to be more specific.  Highlight the things you want on display, cleverly hide the things you don’t.

Knobs aren't just for drawers anymore.  Convert some into dish towel hangers by choosing large glass ones that can be tightened snugly to the wall.

Home Office:

Don’t be afraid of industrial metal shelving.  To make it more you, pick cheery fabrics and clothespin your choices to each side of the unit.

Get creative with office supplies: a scrap of leather converts nicely into a track pad, a beaker holder can be a fun pen holder, or design your own mason jar for stashing paperclips, pushpins, etc.

Bathroom:

Make your own shower curtain with terrycloth bath towels: stick the long sides together and include reinforced holes at the top to hang from the rod.

Your Backyard Makeover!

478613330_46bbe0f85f

If your home is the castle, then your backyard is the royal grounds behind the castle.  Keep your yard fit for a king (and queen) with these helpful tips.

No matter how carefully you water the royal garden, there is always bound to be a bare patch.  But, don’t fret!  On your next grocery or garden store visit, pick up a few baskets of perennials in full bloom.  Remove the hangers and nestle the baskets into the bare spots. (The baskets should easily be disguised in the surrounding foliage.)

Create a relaxing effect with your very own water garden.  Simply fill a metal pail with water, and float candles, glass baubles or no-fuss water lettuce in your new oasis.

Like all royalty, you appreciate your privacy.  Take advantage of potted plants in your yard to create a natural hedge for privacy and shelter.  Arrange them in varying heights and enjoy the beauty of their blooms.

How to Avoid Carpet Stains [VIDEO]

Clever Organizing Solutions for your Garage & Laundry Area!

226210365_1c94d8205e

Truth: You haven’t cleaned your garage in years.  Instead of feeling guilty about your lack of Susie Homemaker-ness, here are some clever organizing solutions for the parts of your house that tend to attract the most clutter.

1. In your Garage: Install an inexpensive pegboard mounted to the wall and keep tools at eye level for whenever you need ‘em.

2. Store things you use regularly, like cleaning supplies, closest to the door to the house.  Hang wire and curtain panels to quickly hide your bins of supplies...how chic!

3. Use a mesh laundry bag to roundup soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, baseballs, and any other loose sports equipment in the area.

4. Utilize shelves and hooks to keep object off the floor and keep your garage clutter free.

5. In the Laundry Area:  Create a clothes hanging section in your laundry room with retractable drying racks.

6. Arrange detergents and other products in the order in which you use them: stain treatment, detergent, dryer sheets...

7. If you still do family laundry (lucky them!), leave out a 3-bin sorter for whites, colors, and delicates.

8. Keep a basket handy to fold anything straight from the dryer.

You CAN Teach a Dog New Tricks; or Simple Updates to Old Furnishings

4868858377_091a75b27f

Simple pieces have an advantage over the more extravagant because of their “update-ability.”  Here are a few tips on ways to update simple pieces of furniture in your home, without setting foot in your local Home Depot.

Wondering what to do with that plain veneered dresser in your guest room?  Update your pulls with vintage style knobs to change the whole vibe of the dresser, while giving it that quality associated with the past.  You can find knobs and pulls at your local vintage shop, thrift stores, or even better...at estate sales!

If your style is more contemporary go for some bakelite knobs, which can be found at a fleamarkets or online at Ebay.  Also looks for knobs in nickel, chrome, Corian, or even rubber to pull off that modern feel.

If your style is traditional, look for knobs that have already stood the test of  time.  Typically these knobs will be composed of ceramic, glass, wood, copper, and pewter.  A classic oak or maple  knob could be just what the doctor ordered.  And just what your end table needed.

#3 Transform your entrance way by painting a runner on the floor.  (Note: this won’t work with carpet.)

Affordable Home Style Secrets from the Pros!

1223494970_40d1113930

Does your living room need a pick-me-up?  Is your bathroom looking a little too blue these days?  Here are some tips from design professionals on ways to update and revive any room in your house!

Re-cycle your own Items!

Could those chairs be repainted and used outside?  Can that kitchen table be “coffee sized” and relocated to the sunroom?  Use your imagination and creativity to turn old pieces into updated styles.

New Uses

Look beyond an item's traditional uses: try tablecloths as throws, wallpaper as framed art, or an old kitchen chair upholstered and turned into a favorite reading chair...

Flower Power

Never underestimate the significance of fresh flowers!  Try your local farmer's market for great deals.

Show Your Varied Tastes.

Avoid being “too balanced” or having too many matching sets.  Arrange an odd number of pillows on your couch, or group together complementary colors of candles in different sizes.

How to Make a String Tree Wall Mural (and Become the Coolest Mom on the Block)

Home_deco_cw

Have you found yourself stuck, spending countless hours pulling off aging, sticky Disney decals from your 12-year-olds wall?  Are you looking for a new (less painful) way to decorate your soon-to-be teen’s room that’s easy to update and doesn’t involve a single broken nail?

Look no further, the string tree wall mural is here!

What you need: pushpins, yarn or string, thimble

What you do: Make the Outline: start arranging the pushpins on the wall in a “tree-like” fashion--don’t worry about being symmetrical or perfect or even--oftentimes trees grow more crooked than straight, anyway.

Wrap the String:  Wrap the brown yarn around the push pins- trunk first, then work on the branches one by one.  It’s a good idea to use the same pin several times.

Add Character: make knotholes by wrapping the string in a circle, vary the size of the branches and space between--add pictures at the ends of branches, get creative!

Starting and Stopping: If you need to run to the bathroom or answer the door in the middle of the project, simply pin the yarn to the wall and wrap it a few times to maintain tension.  Don’t forget to come back! (:

* Place tea light inside Now you’re ready for a fun summer BBQ on the patio, evening cocktail party, or reception! For a different effect, try using a blue Mason jar, instead of the traditional clear glass.

5 Kitchen Decorating Tips (Inspired by a Beach Coast Near You!)

4181632414_1ab2ca14dc

You can bring the beauty of the ocean to your kitchen regardless of whether you can smell the sea breeze from your backyard, or the closest body of water is a plane ride away.

Here are 5 take away tips to decorating your kitchen coastal style!

1. Consider your color palette: blues, greens, beige...think beach colors!

2.  Ever heard of beach glass?  Collect some in a clear glass jar and display anywhere!  Or you can get even more creative and have a colored glass tabletop installed.

3.  Seating Options: don’t be afraid to “mix and match” chairs- different types of chairs, and even a bench can add to the relaxed vibe of your new kitchen.

4.  Choose a variety of fabrics for window treatments and upholstery.  Remember, things have to “go” together, not necessarily “match.”

5.  Embrace Texture: A beautiful wood table or sideboard from a yard sale or even beautiful wood bowls or accessories can be a texture substitute if you have tile floors, for example.

Some of Your Many Flooring Choices

Whether hardwood, stone or tile, the trend is clear: bigger is better.

When it comes to hardwood, deep colored, wide-plank boards are growing in popularity for those desiring an exotic look.  New England colonials show the antique beauty of wide-board as well.  For pine floors, widths up to 20 inches and lengths as long as 11 feet are particularly nice for this slow-growing wood, allowing their tighter and denser grains to be seen without interruption.

In high-moisture areas or hotter climates, tile floors are ideal.  Tile slabs can be made as large as two feet.  Larger-scale homes hold large tile well, however they can also be used to make a large room smaller. Wider tiles can also be used to tighten a wide hallway.

How to Go Green in Every Season #Eco-Friendly #Flooring

10895764_a9a02de5cf

In Winter as in Summer, in Fall as in Spring, you can be “green” all year around by making environmentally responsible choices with your flooring. There are many routes to take. Here are a few:

Choose Recycled Material:

It is becoming more popular for carpet companies to use recycled material or renewable natural fibers in their carpet products.  The core of laminate floors can also be made of recycled material such as old tires or plastics.

Choose Natural Materials:

Choosing stone inlays, hardwood from carbon-neutral trees, or wool carpets are options for natural floors and a smart way to create an organic floor.

Choose Healthy Material:

For many, a green choice is one that reduces the need for unhealthy cleaning chemicals.  Certain floors reduce the amount of bacteria (resilient tile), mold (cork wood), and allergens (wool carpet) which commonly thrive in your household without notice.

Ask the Experts: Flooring and Housing Re-sale Values?

Screen_shot_2011-07-20_at_11

Thanks to Beyond the Welcome Mat for this post!

Question: Is tile or laminate better for resale value of a beach house?

Answer: Tile is always a great choice for any home as it is considered a “permanent floor” thus increasing the value of the home. Also, considering that a beach house is going to deal with above average moisture and salt due to the water and air, you’ll want to go with a floor that is designed to handle the challenges of a beach environment. Laminates are very nice; though not quite as permanent and will not hold up as well to constant moisture as tile will. Go with the tile, the price point is a little higher to begin with but you can consider it a worth-while investment in the long run.

Question: The carpet in our current house is not great, but not terrible either. We’ve had it professionally cleaned, but is worn with some imperfections around vents, banister, hallways, etc. Our plan is that we are hoping to put our house on the market within the next 12 months. If we replace the carpet now will we be very likely to recoup that money in resale value in a year?

Answer: There are many different things to consider here: on the one hand the smell and look of new carpet will definitely show your house better and eliminate another reminder that folks aren’t looking at a new house. However, some buyers may have their own remodeling plans, or they may think they will tear out the carpet and replace it with wood or tile. The best rule of thumb is that in a tough housing market the issue is not so much recovering your money, but rather, making any kind of sale. Anything you can do to make your house show will is critical. Cheap carpet will show as cheap carpet, sort of like new tires on a used car. It’s a quick fix, and may make people wonder if you’re hiding something.

I’d recommend that if your carpet is worn out enough to warrant replacement that you go with middle-range quality carpet, not the cheap stuff. Another thing to consider is the color. Most real estate agents recommend lighter, neutral colors for carpeting. Cream color, light taupe, and soft brown are popular colors for resale homes. If your current carpet is too bold or dark a color you may also benefit from carpet replacement.

Wallet-Wise: Saving Money with Resilient Flooring

3258378233_46ac9b316d

Building or remodeling on a budget can be tough, but with just a little research you can find quick and easy ways to create beautiful and durable floors.  Resilient flooring is one of those ways.  Full of money and time-saving perks, resilient materials include vinyl, linoleum and rubber.

Here are some quick facts on why resilient is the way to be wallet-wise.

  • Instead of emptying your wallet at the rock and marble quarry, choose resilient tiles which can easily simulate rock and marble design for cheap.
  • Labor costs can get high when looking to re-floor a room or two.  Luckily, resilient products are an easy do-it-yourself option, often sold in rolls or squares that can be applied with colored grout.
  • It can be heart-breaking to slowly watch your expensive wood warp in your home’s high-moisture areas.  Avoid the agony by flooring those kitchen, bath and laundry rooms with resilient material.

What are the Perks of Hardwood Flooring?

2351835900_0dafc2dd3e

What are the perks of hardwood floors?  Here are three.

Perk #1 “Change is cheap.”

The first perk of hardwood flooring is the natural design on each plank.  Mother Nature is the artist here making each piece different in terms of grain, color and highlight.

Perk #2 “Easy up-keep.”

The second perk of hardwood flooring is an important one for those of us in need of a remodel. Spare change is hard to come by in our current economic climate.  Luckily, the mood of a room can be easily modified by sanding and applying a re-coat of a darker stain or paint.  A simple inlay of stone or tile within your wood floor will give you something new without dramatically affecting your finances.

Perk #3 "Mom's love it!"

This third perk is music to the busy-mom’s ears.  Grape juice won’t absorb into a wood floor like it would carpet.  Muddy paws on wood will require a quick mop or sweep, saving you money on a carpet cleaner.

What is the Best Way to Clean Your Hardwood Floor?

2632049645_db25ea1328

One of the great perks of hardware floors is their easy-to-clean factor, but what is the best way to clean your floor without damaging the wood?

First, what to avoid:  Vacuuming hardwood, although quick and efficient, will scratch the surface causing it to look uneven and damaged over time.  Choosing to make a homemade cleaning product such as water and vinegar will eat away at your finish due to its high acid content. Without a strong finish, your floor is more susceptible to scratches, dents and corrosion.

While a damp mop may seem like a solution to the acid problem, unfortunately the water will still cause deterioration to the finish and wood.

So what does work?  A gentle sweep with a soft-bristled broom will clear dust and debris, keeping the wood shiny.  For deeper cleaning, it is best to use a wood-specific cleaner on a terry-cloth mop.

Why Wool Works (for the Busy Mom)

318570055_54713ebeb1

The score is Kids: 10, Carpet: 0.

Muddy shoes and grape juice should not be taking up the little time you have.

Why Wool Works: the structure of the carpet will initially resist liquid, giving time for your child to get your attention and blot the spill.  A quick vacuuming will pull the dirt and the fibers of the carpet up, making it easy to clean and freshen your room in an instant.

Still not convinced?  Well, here are some more quick facts:

+ Wool is naturally resistant to flame, protecting you and your family from a small fire spreading.

+ Family members who suffer from dust allergies tend to have difficulty in carpeted area.  Wool carpet, however, captures floating dust and will keep it in it’s fibers until it’s vacuumed.

+ Families desiring to live green can rest assured that this sustainable and natural fiber is one of the best eco-solutions for carpet.  The sheep are happy to share!

Why Wool Works (for the Environmentalist)

2715287035_c29d391b72

The Green Age is upon us, and it’s about time.  Drive hybrid, compost, reduce, reuse, recycle! One second, though.  Take a look under your recycled tire shoes and ask yourself this question: Is my carpet choice a “green” choice?

Why Wool Works: Every year, a fresh batch of wool is sheered and shipped into the international textile industry.  We’re not taking anything we can’t have, the sheep are happy to share.

This naturally renewable fibre is growing in popularity throughout the world.  British environmentalist, The Prince of Wales, has begun the Campaign for Wool to spread the word on the material’s eco-friendly aspects and the importance of it’s use.

So get up from your bio-degradable egg-carton couch and call Carpet Wagon to order your wool carpet today! 1-877-59-WAGON

Why Wool Works (for the Hostess and her Guests)

3870709639_b8072590c2

House-hunting ended successfully; you found yourself the perfect home for hosting.  With a big kitchen for dinners, the perfect deck for late-summer barbecues and open living room for cocktail parties, you are sending out Evites before you’ve looked down:

What will all those guests do to your floors?

Allow me to set the scene in your living room.

Scenario 1:

Your guests are mingling in the living room but conversation is hard-heard as sound bounces off your wooden floors.

Why Wool Works: Wool carpet in your living room will absorb sound and lessen the cacophony of music and conversation.

Scenario 2:

Your feisty feline startles a guest and her glass of red wine soaks your white carpet.

Why Wool Works: The fiber structure of wool naturally resists the initial absorption of liquid, giving you time to blot and saving your guest from a guilt-ridden party-foul.

Scenario 3:

Your dinner parties have the habit of ending in dance parties and stomping stilettos have been hard on your floors.

Why Wool Works: The bounce-back of a wool carpet helps reduce the flattening and footfall paths created in high-traffic areas and on make-shift dance floors.

Consider British Wool for your living room and enjoy care-free hosting!

Keeping Your Carpet Looking Fresh and New #expertadvice

Cashmere

Easy Carpet Care and Maintenance: Vacuuming!

The most important step in caring for your carpet is vacuuming.  Vacuum throughly and frequently, particularly in high traffic areas.  Bear in mind that walking on soiled carpet permits the soil particles to work their way below the surface of the pile where they are far more difficult to remove and can damage the fibers.  Frequent vacuuming removes these particles from the surface before this happens.

For rooms with light traffic, vacuum the traffic lanes twice weekly and the entire area once weekly.  Those areas with heavier traffic require that the traffic lanes be vacuumed daily and the entire area twice weekly.  Up to three passes of the machine will suffice for light soiling, but up to five or seven passes are necessary for heavily soiled areas.  Change the vacuuming direction occasionally to help stand the pile upright and reduce matting.

What is Berber Carpet?

Stacked_berbers_1

Berber carpet is named for a tribe of people that are located in North Africa. These tribal peoples make their cloaks with the same multi-leveled loops. They use heathered, flecked yarns to create unique loops from large loops to tighter loops that help to give the yarn interest and definition. Used in carpeting, these Berber loops serve many other purposes rather than just visual interest.

Berber carpet is one of the most popular carpeting choices available. People choose Berber carpet for many different reasons including its beauty, comfort, and ease of care. It is important to remember, however, that there are many different kinds of Berber carpet so you will want to make sure that you research your choices so that you make a decision that you will be happy and satisfied with for many years. What exactly is Berber carpet, you may ask?

The loops in carpet Berber make the carpeting more comfortable under your feet. They give cushion to your feet or to the rest of your body when you sit or stand on it. This is excellent for areas of the home that are used frequently. Another great benefit of the loops in Berber carpet is that in most cases, depending upon the fibers that you choose, they do not get crushed down when walked on. Berber carpet loops can also work to insulate the room that it is in, both in temperature and sound. That makes it a great choice for a child's room, playroom, family room, or anywhere else in your home.

How Can I Get Rid of Spots on my Wood Floor? #expertadvice

3233597214_c39962fe2c

Question:
What can I do about white, hazy spots on my wood floor? I can really only see them in natural light.  Please help!

Answer:
Believe it or not, the easiest you thing can try first to remove the hazy stains would be toothpaste!  First, take a soft damp cloth and a little bit of toothpaste and rub in a circular motion to attempt to buff away the stain.  Then wipe away any toothpaste residue with a clean damp cloth. If this doesn't work, try mineral spirits using the finest grade of steel wool pad. Apply in the same manner, then wipe clean. If this works, just apply a hardwood floor wax or finish to complete.

How Do I Choose The Right Laminate Flooring For Me? #expertadvice

507558901_4f92dec62a

Question:
I need to purchase some laminate flooring for two rooms in my home. I have no idea what is considered a good product. I am looking at three different brands; Home Legends, Pergo and Traffic Master. Can you give me any advice?

Answer:
Great question!  All of those brands have their good, better and best products. Without product choice specifics, it's hard to give you definitive answers between the three. Pergo is known for having the largest selection of laminate flooring. Pay attention to the AC rating. Laminate floors are rated AC-1 to AC-5. AC-1 products were designed for LIGHT use in the home and would be a good choice for bedrooms where traffic is very light.  AC-1and AC-2 products and would be more affordable as well.  However, if you're looking for a longer lasting laminate in a higher traffic area, you should note that the higher the rating, the greater the durability, which means longevity and a better investment.

Can New Carpet Go Over Tiles? #expertadvice

Robust_hearty

Question:
Is it possible to install carpet on ceramic tile directly?

Answer:
Yes!  It isn't always necessary to remove your exising tiles unless the tiles are damaged or missing in places.  Missing and damaged tiles can cause an uneven look on your new carpet.  However, there is always the possibility that the grout lines could show through, which is why choosing a quality carpet cushion as well as a quality carpet will minimize that possibility. A tackless strip is glued directly onto the tile to hold the carpet. If the tile is in good condition, there shouldn't be any reason to have to remove it.

Does Carpet Make a Room Look Smaller? #expertadvice

Neptune_rs

Question:
Does carpet make a room look smaller?

Answer:
No, carpet itself doesn't make a room look smaller. The thing you’d want to consider would be your carpet color selection.  White and cool colors create an effect of vastness, making a room look larger. Another thing you may want to consider is your choice of paint.  Choose a color for the trim and baseboards that is lighter than the walls as this creates the optical illusion that the walls are set back further making the room look even larger.

Key terms and phrases about rugs:
Hand-Knotted: Tying or knotting pile yarns around woven backing fibers (warp and weft). The resulting face of the rugs is then sheered to a pre-determined height to give the pile uniformity.  The more knots per square foot the more valuable the rug.

Hand-Tufted: Using a tufting gun, pile yarns are forced through a primary backing material known as a scrim.  This process forms a looped pile, and if left uncut the rug is referred to a as hand-hooked.  If the loops are sheered off to create a cut-pile look, it is referred to as hand-tufted.

Hand-Carving: Specialized tools are used to accentuate details of some tufted and even some machine made rugs.  Carving creates added texture and dimension giving the rug a greater apparent value.

Heat-Set: A stage in the yarn production process whereby two or more yarn fibers are twisted together and then heated to ensure the yarns remain joined.  This process allows each yarn point to become fixed, permitting greater design flexibility and appearance retention.

Hand-Spun Wool: Wool that is spun by hand absorbs more dye in areas that are tightly spun and letss in areas that are more loosely spun, giving it textural detail and an arbrash effect.  Hand-spinning is less abrasive to teh wool allowing it to retain more natural lanolin, which in turn, makes the fiber more resilient.

How Do I Keep My Carpet Looking New? #expertadvice

P2911

1. Walk off mats should be used at all entrances to absorb soil and moisture, and mats should be cleaned on a regular basis so they don’t become sources of soil themselves, especially during inclement weather.  Try to keep your sidewalks and entrances free of excessive dirt and substances which can be tracked into the home.

2. Use a quality pad under your carpet, particularly on the stairs.  Good pads not only give better resilience underfoot, but it can also add to the life of your carpet.  Some carpets carry warranties with specific density and thickness requirements.  Before purchasing your carpet pad, review your warranty.

3. Move heavy furniture occasionally to avoid excessive pile crushing.  Put coasters intended for use with carpet under the legs of tables, chairs and other furniture to help distribute the weight of and prevent crushing the pile.  Do not use chair or appliances with rollers or casters on carpet without a chair pad designed for carpet.  Continued use without a chair pad can cause damage to the carpet.

4. When moving heavy wheeled furniture (pianos, buffets, etc), prevent damage by placing a protective barrier of heavy cardboard or plywood between the wheels and the carpet.

5. If you use area rugs over your carpet, be sure to remove and clean them regularly. Clean and restore the pail of the carpet underneath.  Be certain to check area rugs for colorfastness before putting them back over carpet, as the dyes in some rugs may bleed through to the carpet.  After cleaning your carpet, remember to allow complete drying before replacing rugs.

6. Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight with blinds, shades or awnings.

Simple tricks for carpet maintenance #expertadvice

02365

Even the best carpet will eventually have one or more of these common issues.  Find out what they are and what to do about them to keep your carpet looking brand new for years!

Sprouting: If loose ends or “spouts” extend above the rest of the pile, clip them off even with the pile surface.  Never try to pull them out.  After clipping, smooth the area with your fingers.  Sharp edges on your vacuum cleaner, a child’s toy, high heels, or animal claws can cause this condition.

Pile Crushing: All carpet fibers will crush under heavy stationary loads.  Crushing can be reduced by shifting furniture regularly.  Crushing areas can be usually be improved by covering the area with a damp, clean white cloth and then applying heat to the cloth with an electric iron on the lowest setting.  To ensure that the iron does not damage carpet fibers, test carpet in an inconspicuous location such as a closet.  Remove the cloth and restore the pile while it is still hot by brushing it lightly.  Keep traffic off the carpet until it is dry.

Shading: After certain carpet styles have been subjected to traffic, you may notice areas that appear lighter or darker than other areas. Don’t be alarmed.  Shading is the result of of the change in direction of the pile due to pressure from footsteps and vacuuming.  Brushing the pile all in one direction may temporarily correct shading; however, shading is part of the carpet styling and should be expected in varying degrees.  Do not mistake shading for color fading.

Great Tips for Flawless Carpet

02258_aruba

You've just spent your hard earned money on a beautiful new carpet, so now what?   Here are some great tips from the experts at Carpet Wagon for keeping your carpet looking flawless for years to come.

Even though vacuuming can remove most of the dry soil, it is also necessary to clean your carpet on a regular basis to remove the oily, sticky soil that builds up in the pile as a result of cooking vapors, air pollution, and tracked in dirt.  The particles of oily soil deposited on carpet fibers can cause gradual but significant dulling of delicate pastel colors; the color isn’t lost, but is hidden under the film.

If this type of soil is allowed to accumulate, it begins to attract and hold the dry soil.  This is the reason cleaning is so important when dulling of the color is first noticed; if allowed to remain too long it becomes gummy and difficult to remove.

If carpet is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful.  It is a myth that cleaning the carpet before it is absolutely necessary will cause it to get dirty faster.  Carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months depending upon the number of residents and amount and type of activity.

Choice of the proper cleaning system is important.  Some systems may leave residues with promote re-soiling and defeat the whole purpose of cleaning.  The recommendations below represent the best current knowledge and should help prolong the time between cleanings.
